Background

Edgewood High School is located in Ellettsville, Indiana. The school employs about fifty teachers and about 900 students attend the school [2]. The school is the sole high school in the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation and opened in 1964, shortly after the school district consolidated Ellettsville and Stinesville schools [3]. EHS has received the Four Star Award by the state of Indiana in recognition of their demonstrated academic excellence [4][5].

Academic Achievements

JETS

For many years, Edgewood has participated in the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) competitions. The teams have won numerous regional and state titles, and have also been ranked nationally [6][7]. The teams were once coached by Physics teacher Matthew Hitchings, but are now led by Mathematics teacher and tennis coach Doug Uhls.

Academic Super Bowl

The school was also home to the 1997 state champions in Academic Super Bowl Social Studies with members Kyle Lindsey, Doug Reed, and James Gilley. Edgewood also features science, English, and math teams, as well as a fine arts club.

Athletics

Men's Soccer

Edgewood has been the home to several amazing men's soccer teams. Many incredible players have filtered through the program and have gone on to achieve greatness in their lives. The team has experienced a lot of success as of late. In 2009, the team brought home the latest conference championship after tying with Brown County for the top spot. The men's team is currently coached by former player Carl Salzmann. Former coaches include Matt Wilhoit, Ryan Combs, and Scott Prough.

Women's Soccer

The Lady Mustangs have had a few great teams over the years, but they usually finish in the middle of the conference standings. The 2009 team included Megan Hardesty and Laura Luther who were two of the state's leading scorers. The duo combined for 56 goals and 20 assists. Megan has accepted a scholarship to play for Indiana Wesleyan University in the fall of 2010. Laura Luther now plays for Butler University. Former player Leah Cage currently plays for the IUPUI women's soccer team. The Lady Mustangs are currently coached by P.J. Barnes. Former coaches include Beau Jackson, James Clark, Eric Roemer, and Matt Wilhoit.

Basketball

Since 2004, the men's basketball team has become one of the top teams in the Western Indiana Conference. The students have formed an enthusiastic cheering section called "Brown's Brigade", aptly named after head coach Jay Brown. In 2008, Edgewood's Garrett Butcher broke the Monroe County scoring record, ousting many great names including current NBA players Sean May and Jared Jeffries. Garrett was awarded with the IHSSA player of the year for all mid-large size schools, and he currently plays for the two time national runner-up Butler University Bulldogs. [8].

Cross country

The men's cross country team was second at the semi-state meet in 2004, and went on to finish 15th at the state meet.

Track & Field

Edgewood is also the home of Cory and Stacy Martin. Both halves of this brother-sister combination went on to earn track and field All-American status in their respective events while competing for Auburn University [9].

Performing arts

Band

Edgewood High School is known for its award-winning music programs. The Marching Mustangs, currently under the direction of Aaron Wells, have been state finalists in ISSMA competition on six occasions: finishing 4th in 2000, 8th in 2002, 5th in 2007, T-8th in 2008, 2nd in 2009, and 2nd in 2010. In 2002 the Mustangs took home first place in their class at the highly competitive Bands of America regional contest in Louisville, KY. The band took a trip to Dublin, Ireland in March 2009 where they performed in the St. Patrick's Day Parade and also at the historic Guinness Brewery. Their performance in the parade earned the band the award for best youth band, and during the trip they were also featured on NBC's The Today Show. The concert and jazz bands have experienced a similar decorated past as well, winning numerous distinguished honors not only in the state of Indiana, but in contests across the country as well. Former directors include Tom Cox, Michael E. Bolla, and Neil A. Crotty [10].

Choir

The choirs have had similar success. Edgewood's top group, Music Warehouse, has been honored to receive grand-champion and first-runner-up awards throughout the nation. Music Warehouse has served as a trend setter for the national show choir standard. Sophisticated Ladies, Edgewood's all female choir group, placed 1st in the unisex division at Show Choir Nationals in Nashville in spring of 2011. The Edgewood Choral Department and its director Verda Savage were honored by the Indiana State Senate in 2001. Edgewood's show choirs have been competing and bringing honor to their school and community for 35 years.

Theatre

The actors in the drama club are reflectively known as the Masqued Crafters. The club was under the direction of Elizabeth Perney, but has since been under the direction of junior high social studies teacher Elisabeth Addleman. Previous directors include Sally Murphy.
